A Letter from Our CEO and 2021 in Review

 

Friends and Family of the NCC,

In many ways, it’s hard to believe that we have arrived at the end of 2021: a year that further demonstrated the critical need for increased cybersecurity.  Too often, we witnessed the all-too-real cost of cyber-attacks which have crippling effects and do not discriminate among victims. While we all have experienced a difficult year through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and it’s derivatives, I’m pleased with the tremendous collaboration exercised throughout the NCC with our partners, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community that has helped in building trust, knowledge, and security throughout space and cyberspace.  Thank you for your magnificent dedication, support, and accomplishments!

In the spirit of the season, I’ve been reflecting on the gratitude I have for my family: my wife Julee, children, and grandchildren, but also for our NCC family — our Board of Directors and staff — who have accomplished so much together during 2021. Just over a year ago, I started my journey with NCC as the CEO and I could not be more proud of the milestones that you have achieved through our programs and initiatives.  Briefly, through our NCC:

–  the Space ISAC continues to grow in facilitating collaboration across the global space industry;

–  our K-12 initiatives, the Student Alliance, and the Adult Cyber Education program are addressing critical cybersecurity workforce shortages;

–  we’ve successfully launched the Colorado Cyber Resource Center; and

–  the frontlines of our democracy are more secure after our NCC staff briefed and discussed Cybersecurity hygiene with over 1,300 state and local leaders through our in-person and webinar presentations of “Cybersecurity for State Leaders”.

The future of the NCC is bright, thanks to our family and community, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with each of you. From all of us at the NCC, we wish you and your loved ones a safe, happy holiday season and a very Happy New Year!

2021 NCC Highlights

 

Space ISAC:

• Threat Intelligence Platform and Member Portal launched to members
• Declared Initial Operating Capability
• Established 10 collaborative groups (Task Forces, Working Groups, Communities of Interest)
• 2^nd Value of Space Summit, 2021 expanded with panelists nationally and internationally
• Microsoft and L3Harris Technologies joined the Founding Board of Directors
• 35 Founding and General members as 2021 closes
• Headquarters and Watch Center construction started in October 2021

Cyber Education:

• Doubled the number of students participating in our high school cyber education classes and generated 29K in revenue for the NCC
• Continued success with adult education, conducting three classes for a total of 75 registered adult learners
• Finalized partnership with Range Force to provide cybersecurity training for over 500 students across the nation. This effort was funded by the high school cyber education program revenue.
• Conducted three cyber summer camps with a total of 110 students
• Forged partnership with AFCEA and Deloitte and conducted first CTF with for high schools for the Rocky Mountain Cyberspace Symposium

Cyber for State Leaders, supported by Google:

• Briefed 1,342 individuals state and local leaders across the country
• Developed and deployed unique curriculum featuring key national industry and public leaders
• Developing Chapter 2 for 2022

Colorado Cyber Resource Center:

• Launched one-stop-shop for Colorado local governments to build out their cybersecurity programs in a way that is sustainable and unique to them
• Hosted 3 webinars for Colorado local governments with industry leaders on pressing cyber issues
• Developed content for local governments to begin taking advantage of to grow their programs
• Launching statewide cyber range for students, adults and upskilling for professionals and local governments throughout Colorado

Secure the Vote

• Facilitated three electronic ballot return pilots in Oregon, Utah and Virginia
