IoT Challenges Strike Audi & Volkswagen

Internet-connected cars are awesome — the ultimate solution to road-tripping-with-kids, hands-free-calling to your boss and last-minute-restaurant-finding. But alas, there’s a dark side to the in-car butler, especially if your car happens to be an Audi or Volkswagen.

Seems that the In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems in some brand models including Golf GTE and some Audi models have been found with vulnerabilities. The weak link can give attackers a remote access to conversations of drivers as well as full access to their address book and navigation systems. The IVI is also connected to the car’s acceleration and braking system. Yikes. An update has been issued but IVI system cannot be patched over-the-air system and models sold are still at risk.
