Samsung SmartThing Not-So-Smart

If you purchased smart locks or remote-controlled-surveillance systems for your home, you may have done a great job keeping cat burglars out, but may have unknowingly given cyber crooks direct access to your home. Last week, Cisco Talos researchers unearthed 20 vulnerabilities in the Samsung SmartThings Hub, that could give attackers the ability to monitor and even control devices within your home. That includes locks and cameras. The Samsung device acts as sort of a brain for a bevy of IoT devices including cameras, thermostats, lightbulbs, plugs, etc.

Samsung has already released fixes so if you’ve got one running, it would be a good idea to make sure that your device has been automatically updated with the most recent firmware. More details about the specific vulnerabilities are provided in this blog post.
