Satellite Cyber Wars

Danger, Will Robinson, Danger! Just when you thought cyber threats had spread to nearly every industry on Earth, now we have to worry about outer space, too. According to researchers at security juggernaut Symantec, China-based hackers have been targeting satellite, telecom and defense companies in the United States and Southeast Asia.

At least two known cyber espionage groups, including China-based Thrip and Russian-based Turla APT, have been identified as potential threats to the massive amounts of information flowing in and out of aging satellite systems, many with little or no real security. Experts are working hard to mitigate the risks, but it’s an uphill battle since physical access is, well…pretty much impossible,

Oh, and once Elon Musk launches his 4,400 new satellites into orbit, the stakes are going to be raised again.
