Overview
Objective/Purpose: To engage the community by offering free education on essential cyber and IT hygiene, helping older adults and technologically novice individuals develop practical digital safety skills. This initiative bridges the cybersecurity knowledge gap, promotes safer online behaviors, and strengthens relationships between students, industry professionals, and community members.
Description: The Cyber Day of Service will feature 45 freshmen from the Cybersecurity and Computer Science Department of UCCS, alongside industry professionals, providing personalized cyber hygiene and IT safety training. The event is tailored to older adults and individuals unfamiliar with technology but is open to everyone. Through hands-on learning experiences, participants will gain practical skills in protecting themselves from cyber threats.
Students and professionals will cover key cybersecurity topics, including:
(+) Password Security: Importance of strong, unique passwords and using password managers.
(+) Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): How to enable MFA and why it’s crucial for account security.
(+) Software and Device Updates: Keeping operating systems, apps, and software up to date to prevent vulnerabilities.
(+) Phishing Awareness: Recognizing and avoiding phishing scams.
(+) Antivirus and Anti-Malware Protection: Installing and maintaining security software to protect devices.
(+) Data Backup and Recovery: Regularly backing up important data and knowing how to recover it if needed.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your accounts. While not all students may be trained in setting it up, those who are knowledgeable will be available to help participants enable and use MFA.
12. Will there be help for recognizing phishing scams?
Yes, phishing awareness will be discussed as part of the digital safety conversations, helping participants recognize and avoid common scams.
13. Can I learn how to secure my home Wi-Fi network?
Yes, while this was not originally included, it can be integrated into the student learning, and participants will have access to help on securing their home Wi-Fi networks.

Yes, light snacks and beverages will be available for attendees.
15. Can I come for part of the event, or do I need to stay the entire time?
Yes, you are welcome to come for part of the event. It is an open house format, so there is no requirement to stay the entire time.
